Spilled oils adsorption

Market - The clean-up cost of an oil spill depends on multiple factors and is difficult to accurately assess.1 However, the latest large-scale oil spill – the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 – is estimated to have a cost a total of approximately US$40 billion.2

Challenge – Grafysorber® can be used in ecologic adsorbent containment systems such as barriers or with high adsorption capacity for oil spill clean-up activities.

Product – Super-expanded graphite (Grafysorber®), usable as loose material or within booms.

Application – “GEnIuS project” (Graphene Eco Innovative Sorbent): first application and market replication projects co-funded by the European Union.

Grafysorber® advantages:

  • It performs at least 4 times better than the other sorbent actually on the market. The maximum adsorption capacity for medium viscosity oils is in the range of 80-90 g/g;
  • It removes hydrocarbons at low concentrations (from ppm to ppb);
  • It removes about 200 g/g of medium viscosity oil from water surface;
  • Low cost-efficiency ratio: 0.15 €/kg of oil (medium viscosity) removed, 0.375 €/kg of oil (medium viscosity) adsorbed;
  • The sorbed oil and the used sorbent material can be recovered and recycled;
